Tips For Effective Parent-Child Communication

Communicating effectively with one’s child is perhaps one of the toughest challenges that parents have to face. In spite of trying to open a two-way communication line with our child, it gets frustrating if we find that their attention is not on the ongoing conversation or on us at all. We complain about broken communication lines when all the time we find it completely alright to converse with them when we are folding clothes, reading the newspaper, writing letters or cooking meals.

By nature children get easily distracted and do not always respond as expected to their environment. It becomes the duty of the parents to encourage positive communication patterns and to discourage the act of ignoring communication. In order to make sure that a non-verbal agreement does not ensue, it is important to educate the child on proper communication forms and hence prevent this. Teaching by example is the best method. While conversing, you must direct your complete attention on them and total focus on the conversation. Allow voicemail to take your calls, turn the television off or go to a room with no distractions if that’s what it takes.

You must gently and in age appropriate terms explain to your child what is wrong with their form of communication and why it doesn’t work. Even when there are hard questions, you must show you child the most effective manner of communication. Become a good listener. You must encourage them to tell their side of the story and to voice their opinions and respond positively to show that you understand their point of view.

You must communicate with your child in a consistent manner. You must send out the same signals each time you interact. The child must be allowed to see that you will definitely call their attention whenever unwanted behavior takes place.

Kids are after all kids and it is normal for them to be non-communicative and non-reactive sometimes. Your child is your domain and you should know best how to interpret his or her behavior and gauge improvement in communication skills. Modeling positive communication skills is the best way of ensuring that your child imbibes healthy communication patterns.

Do you know what “communication” really means to you,
personally? Does it mean the same to you as it does to
your friends, family, and co-workers?

Most people think they understand communication, but even a
dictionary describes only a sadly pale representation of the
potential reality. Definitions do usually include the notion that
communication involves more than just the written or spoken
word – but did you know that ants and iguanas communicate
with chemicals, and bees by dancing?

So, what do you communicate with your choice of personal
scents (chemicals)? Do you realize that this includes perfumes,
deodorants, soaps, shampoos, and laundry products? What
messages do you send with your individual style of dancing?
Did you know that the pupils of your eyes dilate when you are
attracted to someone?

Most people are aware of the concept of non-verbal communication,
and generally assume this means body language and facial
expressions. The Victorians, though, could carry on entire
conversations using only flowers. The same is possible with
crystals, colors, animals (use their images to avoid creating
zoos of conversational by-play!), and – with a little bit of a stretch
to accept modern-day interpretations – Celtic knotwork. There are
dozens of other symbolic languages – enough to suit everyone’s
preference and communication style!

Families and close friends usually have their own symbolic
language, even if they’re not consciously aware of it. It’s a
rare family that doesn’t have an inside joke, where a look,
a phrase, or a gesture encapsulates (symbolizes) the entire
experience and can set a roomful of people into laughter.
More complex than that are the almost instinctive
understandings that develop between people who live together
or are very close friends – all based on nonverbal symbols of
some sort.

Another seldom-explored concept involves how we communicate
with ourselves. What messages – symbolic and otherwise – are
we sending to ourselves when we overload our schedules with
too many chores and not enough relaxation, or when we speak
harshly to ourselves over small mistakes? You probably
recognize friends’ and co-workers’ tendencies to be much harder
on themselves than they are on others; do you see it in yourself?

Do you share the commonly-held belief that personal and
professional politics is somehow not quite nice, slightly
slimy and maybe even unethical, not something you really
want to be doing? Or do you recognize the wonderfully
positive impact that you can have when you choose to
become personally excellent at the broad range of
communication that goes into “playing” politics, whether
at home or in the office?

If you are one of many who believe that understanding someone’s
viewpoint means agreeing with him or her, you are missing out on
a powerful tool for reducing conflict. Likewise, if you forget that
communication styles are as varied as hair color (though not as
easily changed!), you’re condemning yourself and those around
you to frustration and missed messages.

The world of communication is as wide and varied as the people
you meet. Finding new ways to convey your message is a
lifelong venture that is wonderfully rewarding!

“The most important thing in communication is to hear what
isn’t being said.” Peter Drucker, 1909-2005, naturalized
citizen of the United States who is often cited as the ‘founding
father’ of the study of management.

Communication is a very important part of our daily lives. The skills we use to communicate will greatly determine our level of personal happiness and fulfillment. Effective communication makes our lives work. It helps us make and keep friends. It helps us become successful within our work.

Sometimes, however, the role models we need to learn the proper skills for good communication are not available and problems may begin and persist without these skills. By modeling the basic techniques, we can teach future generations how to develop healthier relationships.

One of the biggest ways to turn persons off is through body language. Our nonverbal messages disclose much information about ourselves, our feelings and attitudes. By increasing awareness of our body language, we can convey to others our interests and likings which we in turn want to receive. We can do this by finding a close distance in which we can talk and interact comfortably and by maintaining eye contact which conveys sincerity, smiling, leaning forward when we speak, uncrossing arms and legs and allowing expressions to show.

Self disclosure is an important part of communication. It adds excitement and develops intimacy within our relationships because we are communicating information about ourselves. The risk of self disclosure will lead our relationships to the level of intimacy that we desire.

Some suggestions for this area:
-Practice sharing factual information about ourselves. When comfortable with this, move on to the next step.
-Share your thoughts, feelings and needs but only about the past or future, such as your beliefs, hopes or thoughts on the future.
-From here share your feelings and needs on a “here and now” basis. This will involve saying what attracts us to the other person, saying what we like and dislike about their behavior. This is the most difficult level of disclosure but also the most satisfying. When we risk sharing our true feelings we can become closer to others and create stronger bonds.

Other things to keep in mind when disclosing include:
-Preparing ahead of time on what we think, feel and want within our relationship.
-Being positive.
-Taking responsibility for our position by using “I” messages, such as ” I think”, “I want”, “I feel” and not using “You” messages such as “You always” or “You never”. This puts the other person on the defensive.

Listening is another important part of communication. It is our ability to listen that makes and keeps relationships going. When we show others that we are good listeners, they are drawn to us. By taking the time to listen we learn to understand others. Listening is a commitment to the understanding of how others see things. It is also a compliment to others because we are telling them we care. Listening however does not mean we have to sit still with our mouths shut. Listening involves active participation.

Helpful suggestions for healthy listening skills include:
-moving away from distractions.
-leaning forward.
-maintaining good eye contact.
-nodding and paraphrasing.
-asking questions.
-committing yourself to understanding the other person’s viewpoint.

The only way to learn these skills is by using them. It may feel awkward using these techniques at first but as we continue to work at them, they become second nature. The benefits we will gain from these skills will convince us that it is worth the initial discomfort.

How exactly am I supposed to say "lets all get along" when they deny these things happen everyday?

White racism happens…I admit that. But I also see that it doesn’t happen to manifest in violence and death nearly as often as black racism. I’ll match anybody on detail for detail over the last one hundred years and prove that blacks have killed far more whites than the inverse. Any takers?

I’ll spot you the Tulsa race riots, the Phillips County massacre, and the generous estimate of 7000 lynchings since 1865 and still school show you that blacks have murdered more whites.

Organizations are open dynamic systems for transforming resource inputs into saleable outputs (goods & services). They are created to provide useful products and services that satisfy the needs of customers and provide value to stakeholders. But the interests of various stakeholders (whether employees, customers, suppliers, or stakeholders) are not always aligned. This places conflicting pressures and demand on managers.

To maintain organizational viability, managers seek to navigate competitive environmental forces and work to achieve goals in the areas of productivity, satisfaction, and revitalization. One of the realities of life in organizations is that today’s effective practices are not likely to suffice tomorrow. Whether pulled by the success of growth or jolted by crisis and downturn, managers must periodically transform the system to adapt to environmental realities. In the process of transformation, managers can target changes in the key internal resources such as tasks, technology, organization, people, and culture. Maintaining a dynamic balance among these resources is what human resources management is all about. Particularly, in order to analyze the changes that occur to an organization’s strategy, structure, and culture, due to consumer demand, the human resource management communication framework becomes the dominant tool.

Effective communication is essential for transmitting directives, building co-operation and team spirit, optimizing performance and satisfaction, and avoiding and solving problems. Formal communication channels flow in downward, upward, and horizontal directions. Informal networks, essential for any contemporary business unit, are extremely useful as the need to tap into current feelings and reactions of employees, apart of customers, is evident. Thus, messages need to be encoded carefully so that they clearly communicate intentions, feelings, and expectations. Then these should be sent through the most appropriate channels, and feedback should be solicited from the receiver to be sure that the message was decoded as intended.

Such barriers as frames of reference, value judgments, selective listening, filtering and distrust complicate the internal and external communication systems of companies. They can be overcome by sending clear, complete, and specific messages. Demonstrating expertise, clarifying intentions, being reliable and dynamic can enhance credibility, exhibiting warmth and friendliness, and building a positive image. Soliciting and providing specific feedback can also enhance communication effectiveness.

One of the most important consumer satisfaction elements is the ability to ask questions and being able to receive appropriately answers from company executives. Gaining information, uncovering motives, giving incentives, obtaining participation, checking understanding, initiating the thinking process, inducing agreements, and refocusing attention, are all essential components of an effective consumer communication plan. Thus, employees’ active listening skills assist a company to build rapport with customers and help them obtain the relevant information they need.

Moreover, body language is useful both in reading the emotions and attitudes of customers and in reinforcing an employee’s verbal messages. Understanding vocal qualities can enhance the reading of other people’s messages by a company’s employees and help them to project their own, more effectively.

Concluding, due to the growing complexity and turbulence of the business environment and the related growth in research knowledge about customer behavior patterns, managers of the 21st century have to take four themes as paramount; the necessity of managing the challenges of change; functioning within a global environment; being sensitive to the diversity among people; and behaving with ethical integrity.

Patients (include both positive and negative aspects)

Always be careful that you understand what your doctor says to you and what she/he understands what you said to her/him. A few years ago, I began falling down with no reason. My dr thot it was neurological and she ran a test on me – negative results. The falls continued. I began to develop two ideas about the falls – one neurological and one functional. I thot that she understood my two ideas. She ordered an MRI and an x-ray. I thot I understood what areas tests covered. They showed nothing so she sent me to a neurologist. I spent almost two years with the neuro until I we finally discovered I had very severe degenerative arthritis of the hip. It turned out that she did not understand what I had told her, and I had not understood what the x-rays she ordered included. I ended up with a total hip replacement. ALWAYS have your dr show you what specific areas are being covered by the tests. ALWAYS have your dr explain back to you what they think you told them unless it is really obvious. The way patients use words and the way drs use words may differ,

Today’s organizations must contend with increasingly complex communications environments that feature a wide array of communications methods. Employees, business partners, and customers communicate with one another through infinite combinations of phones, voice messaging, e-mail, fax, mobile clients, rich-media conferencing and other communication gadgets. One thing that is very important is proper communication. Whether you use the age-old snail mail or an email, the key to success lies in effective communication. One should get clear message as to what exactly is required or told by you. It is very important to streamline communication whether you are conversing in person or through an age-old snail mail, email or over the phone.

When you are talking to a person or a group of people face to face, to streamline communication follow some simple rules. Always prepare your opening lines. Sometimes, you may not agree with their response, but please do not immediately push your opposite view at them. Another way which streamline communication with others is when you give positive re-enforcement to the people you talk with and keep away from criticism of people that are not present. Speaking just a bit slower to allow yourself to select your most appropriate vocabulary and to give the impression of thoughtfulness is another way that streamline communication.

For business, streamline communications in emails and letters is simple yet is not really cared about most of the people. There are certain ethics if business emails and letters that are to be followed that in turn streamline communications.

While writing a letter or an email, list those personal details of the person you are writing to which you will use in the letter. Write as if you were just talking to the reader, stick to one main topic in a letter. When you have covered all the important points, STOP.

Your phone communication also plays a vital role in building effective relationships. To streamline communication, it is necessary for you to create a good impression over the phone. Be careful of what you say over the phone. Try to set up a block of time where you can make your phone calls with minimum interruption. Write down, either on paper or on your computer, the essential points that you want to cover in the call before you pick up the handset. Think carefully about the first thing you will say to the other person

Your voice is of great importance in phone communication. Correct tone and language leaves great impact over the listener. Presentation of a message over the phone is of great importance in streamline communication. Make sure that you do not deliver an unpleasant message over the phone. Most important of all is a good listener. Do not interrupt when the other person is expressing his or her view.

Communication in any form plays an important role in our lives. No one can teach how to streamline communication but offer guidelines to do so. All one needs is practice!

Concept is very important in human’s thinking. Concept is always the continuous development in the life. In the reality, to understand correctly about words in a problem is a difficulty, most is in the foreign languages
I have used to experience when I said wrong a word to a foreigner! and I must still remember forever. That is the pronunciation of “steal – style” ( French speaks “style” is /sti:l/). Oh, it was dangerous for me in that time.

I need to make a list of positive and negative aspects found in my current relationships. It is for a communication class that I am taking.

By current relationships would that mean my fiance, family and friends?

Can you give me some examples of what positive and negative aspects of your current relationships are? Because I really do not understand what the professor means by ‘positive and negative aspects’ in current relationships.

Positive aspects could be:

-Good Communication
-Support each other
-Caring and sensitivity to each other
-Trust
-Faithfulness
-Love and excitement
-Good emotional connection

Negative Aspects would be like:

-Lack of trust
-Frequent arguments
-Little communication
-Barely seeing eachother
-Lack of Intimacy
-Breaking up and getting back together frequently.

I’m assuming he’s talking about with your significant other but if its with family it would be similar the good parts of your family relationship and the bad
