This is a quick compressed overview of several radio communication options people might be faced with. I try to cover the very basic pros/cons of each, but I hope to do more reviews of actual equipment in the future. Here are some good links to get people started on the technologies:

Thanks for the reply. I guess having either FRS, EXRS, CB, etc is alot better than not have anything, including telephone services. I hope people don’t think of these as “toy walkie-talkies”, they are in fact highly advanced/powerful ones that they should have in their nightstand.

I guess I have too much to say, I always run into the char limit. Anyway, Digital technology has been popular with law enforcement for quite some time in the US, it’s good to see more options enter into personal use. Worth mentioning is that the 900Mhz band is hardly unused (like they make it sound). It’s very popular with cordless electronics. Thanks for watching and commenting! It’s definitely a tech worth looking into.

It still seems a bit rare (as far as knowing someone with one), but I’m excited to see more digital radios like eXRS come out for personal use. They definitely have an advantage over FRS/GMRS (900Mhz better range, and digital privacy) but unfortunately are still limited by their built in antenna (just like FRS/GMRS). This is very similar to the same technology that cordless phones have been using for quite awhile, so I’m surprised we haven’t seen more of these.

I see there is a new type of FRS caled Extreme Radio Service EXRS, and offers private communication. The site I looked at was: trisquare . us and these radios, along with the FRS (Family Service Radios) are sold at many common stores such as Kmart and Walmart. Check the links there.
